Based on Ken Coleman’s book and what I have found applicable through time.
Summary
To activate the Proximity Principle, all you have to do is ask yourself three questions:
Who do I need to know?
Where do I need to be?
What do I need to start doing?
People
If you are looking to jump careers, learn a new skill, or join a new clan of people the more you hang out in those groups and settings the increased likelihood you will integrate yourself into those groups. For example, if you want to learn how to be better at making pizza for example…what do you think you should do? Probably be around those who are great at making pizza or even better work at a pizzeria! Benefits of this? You can learn the skill, sell your pizza out of your house or at festivals even open up your pizza shop.
This is relatable in business too, if you want to land a new job in a foreign department you should start learning from those people already working in that department! Start by walking up to that individual and asking “Do you mind if I shadow you for the day?” the worst thing they can say is “No” or “Not right now” which both are more than okay, why? You can try this week over week with them and others in that department and soon enough you will get a “Yes” or “Sure”. That yes or sure brings you that much closer to your goal and saves you the time and effort it would have taken rather if you would have done a class at college or a course online.
Places
See the below infographic from Ken’s book.
The two most important out of that lift of five in my opinion are #1 and #5.
The place where you are right now
Are you happy? What do you want to achieve? What is your current mindset? What drives you? What is your “why”? Are you in the geographic that you need to be in?
A place to grow and polish skills
One of the best places to be is a place where you can constantly learn and grow the skills you just learned. You will feel more engaged and motivated to do good work with the potential to start your own business. Growth combined with a growth mindset is a deadly combination to have.. go chase it!
Practice
To get to the practice stage is a hard..long road! When you make it here it’s simple what you need to do.. just do it! You are around the right people and you are in the right place, now it is time to take action and attack the goal that you are pursuing.
Identifying “opportunities to do what you love is as simple as getting around the right people and being in the right places.” Coleman explains that, “The right people + The right places = Opportunities”
What can you do today to put yourself in the right place and around the right people to take action? Most of the time we are in such a routine that we develop a tunnel vision blinded to potential opportunities.
